Flaxby in Ryder Cup Bid

The Flaxby Hotel and Country Club is aiming to bring the Ryder Cup to Yorkshire. The story appeared today in the Yorkshire Post and has had such an impact that it has also featured in Iain Maitland's UKPA property alerts. Iain said to his readers....

"It has winner all over it.The Yorkshire Post has run a story today which really blows the deal wide open to the general public. "

(Yorkshire Post)"An ambitious bid to bring the Ryder Cup to the region for the first time in more than half a century has been launched. Plans are underway to bring the showpiece golfing event to one of the country\\\'s most exclusive hotels, which is due to be built between York and Harrogate. The bid by the Skelwith Group, which is behind the £100m Flaxby Park Golf and Country Club, is being backed by the regional development agency, Yorkshire Forward, and the Yorkshire Tourist Board."

"The Ryder Cup was last held in the region in 1957 at the Lindrick Golf Club near Worksop. However, an official bid will now be made to the European PGA amid hopes the tournament could be held at the Flaxby in either 2018 or 2022. If successful, the arrival of the Ryder Cup would be a massive injection into the region's economy. The tournament has a global television audience of more than 435 million and its regional economic impact is estimated at between £100m and £120m. The Skelwith Group's managing director, Paul Ellis, said: "We are in talks with the major events team at Yorkshire Forward and we are all very excited by the bid. As an aspiring golfer my vision is to bring the best events to the Flaxby, and the Ryder Cup is the Everest of the golfing world."

"A 27-hole golf course has already been created at the Flaxby site, and it is hoped other major events including PGA tournaments, the Solheim Cup and the Open could also eventually be brought to the hotel. The Yorkshire Tourist Board's chief executive, David Andrews, said: "Getting the Ryder Cup to Yorkshire will provide a massive shot in the arm for the visitor economy and promote the county internationally."

"Such a major event will be a showcase for all the many highlights in the area and confirm the sporting heritage of the region. The Flaxby Country Club, once open, will be the ideal venue to host this event. The five star hotel, which will have rooms available for up to £800 a night, will be set in 283 acres of woodland just off the A1. It is hoped the 303-room development will be completed by 2011."
